K.B.W / KEPT BY THE WORD

You Were There

A song by K.B.W

BEHIND THE SONG

The story behind it.

There was a time in my life when I was running from the calling I felt God had placed on me. I was living in the world, following my flesh, chasing things that I knew weren't pleasing to Him. But even in those moments, I could feel His presence. I felt the conviction in my spirit. No matter how far I tried to run, God kept pulling at my heart. He wouldn't let me become comfortable in a life He hadn't called me to live.

That's what makes this song so personal to me.

When I think about the God who created the entire universe, every star, every galaxy, everything we can and cannot see, I struggle to comprehend how a God so great could care so deeply about someone like me. With all of creation before Him, He still saw me. He still reached for me. Even when I wasn't reaching for Him.

And then I think about Jesus Christ. The One who willingly gave His life for us. Not because we earned it. Not because we deserved it. But because He loved us. Even when we were lost, even when we turned away, even when we chose the world over Him, His love remained.

That's a kind of love I don't think our human minds can ever fully comprehend.

"You Were There" brings me to tears because it's more than a song to me. It's a reminder of how patient, merciful, and faithful God has been throughout my life. When I look back at the moments I thought I was walking alone, I realize now that He was there the entire time.

Even when I ran from Him, He never stopped reaching for me.

And for that, I'll spend the rest of my life giving Him the glory.

The lyrics Written by K.B.W

Verse 1

Before the light covered the dark
Before the stars had learned to shine
You were there
You spoke to seas brought them water
Dust rose up and carried breath
All creation knows Your glory
Still You set Your love on us

Pre-Chorus

What kind of King steps down from glory
For a world that turned away
What kind of Love sees every failure
And still comes close enough to save

Chorus

You were there
When I had nothing I could bring You
I was lost, no light to guide me
You were there
You saw the worst and came to save me
Bore the cross I could not carry
Jesus, You were there
Before I ever reached for Heaven
Heaven reached for me
You were there

Verse 2

I was living on Your mercy
Calling every breath my own
Running after lesser kingdoms
While You kept calling me home
You knew every time I'd wander
Every secret I would hide
Still the hands that hung the heavens
Opened wide and chose our lives

Pre-Chorus

You knew the cup before You took it
Knew the nails before the tree
The Holy One became the offering
And mercy made a place for me

Chorus

You were there
When I had nothing I could bring You
I was lost, no light to guide me
You were there

You saw the worst and came to save me
Bore the cross I couldn't carry
Jesus, You were there

Before I ever reached for Heaven
Heaven reached for me
You were there
You were there

Bridge

Holy, holy
Maker of the heavens
Author of forever
Still You came this close

Worthy, worthy
Lion and the Lamb
All creation in Your hands
And You opened them for me

Holy, holy
Nothing stands above You
Nothing was before You
Nothing comes between
Me and Jesus
Name above all names
The grave could never hold You
Forever You will reign

Verse 3

And I had no claim to mercy
I had nothing left to prove
You didn't wait until I found You
You came looking for me too
I was dead in all my striving
You breathed life into these bones
The God who holds the whole creation
Wouldn't leave my heart alone

Chorus

You were there
When I had nothing I could bring You
I was lost, no light to guide me
You were there
You saw the worst and came to save me
Bore the cross I couldn't carry
Jesus, You were there
Before I ever reached for Heaven
Heaven reached for me

THE STORY OF K.B.W

The pen came back.
The purpose changed.

I didn't write anything for over a decade. I had stepped away from music because I could no longer support how my words were being used.

“I Got the Ghost” started with a hook. That opened the door to writing again, this time with God as the foundation.

I'm a father. I'm still learning. The music comes from faith, struggle, growth, and conviction. Every song is an opportunity to point someone toward Christ.

ON THE RECORD / ABOUT THE MUSIC

Every lyric is written by me. Every story, idea, message, and meaning comes from me.

I use AI as part of the production process, including the vocals. Technology allowed me to return to music without becoming something I've never wanted to be.

The technology is part of the process.
The testimony is mine.
